All too soon it’s time to Orange the world again. Welcome back to my blog. Today, I attempt to discuss this global event which puts women’s issues at the forefront of discussions. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign aimed at raising awareness and combating gender-based violence. It begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on December 10, Human Rights Day.
Background
It highlights the systemic nature of gender-based violence, encompassing issues like domestic violence, sexual harassment, human trafficking, and femicide. The United Nations often designates an annual theme for the campaign. For 2024, a quick search or reference to official UN Women communications provides the exact theme which is,Time to Act Now.
Raise Awareness
Share educational resources and statistics on gender-based violence. Advocate for Policy Change. Governments, NGOs, activists, and individuals use this period to host workshops, marches, art exhibits, and advocacy events.
Support Survivors
Donate to organizations assisting survivors of gender-based violence or volunteer at shelters. Support campaigns calling for stronger legal protections and resources for survivors.
Promote Education
Host discussions or share materials on consent, gender equality, and healthy relationships. Also, there is the need to explore specific activities or resources related to the campaign. For example, hold press conferences and events tailored at providing information that educates the public on the need to end gender based violence in communities.
Men’s participation
When men are involved, this campaign to end violence against women and girls will be eradicated. The main perpetrators of the violence are these men and so why leave them out of the campaign. Special events where men are seen on a float in t-shirts with inscriptions to end violence will go a long way to help achieve the ultimate goal.
