Good to see all the political parties out there with their fans engaging in the rallies here in Accra. I haven’t quite followed the other regions but Accra rallies have been massive. Not to talk of the one being held today at the Legon and Madina parks. Interesting times huh? Who would have thought the two major political parties will converge in the same constituency for their final rallies. I hear it’s been a massive turn up for both parties. Meanwhile some people have gone on to do their comparisons of which party’s rally was well organized.
Charity
Let me digress a little. They say charity begins at home. A person’s first mentors are their parents or guardians before they even begin to socialize. Whoever brought you up must have played some role in shaping the person you are today. That notwithstanding, may homes are broken because there is no love. Here, I am not even referring to single parenthood because even a blind person can do a better job at caring for a child. What I mean is most parents or guardians themselves feel inadequate, and so they are not able to fully bring up a child in the right way.
Leaders
As earlier mentioned, a person’s first leaders or mentors are their parents. When parents fail to become the right leaders, they break the trust of a child and therefore they are not able to look up to others for help or advise. But a true leader is one who can impart on the lives of others be it their own biological children or not. It has become a cliche that anyone can become a leader. However, in a recent conversation with an old actor friend, we could all agree that not everyone possessed leadership qualities to become a leader .
Counsel
In the book Rich Dad Poor Dad, Robert Kiyosaki explains this concept succinctly. It was obvious from the book that although the author had a biological father, he choose to learn certain key life principles from his friend’s dad. This explains how eventhough one respects their parents, they go ahead to seek counsel and guidance from other elders. Mentorship is important in every human’s life. That is why we must seek good counsel from others who have achieved much better than us when we feel the need to.
Mentors
Although I chose to use this series to talk more about the elections. Today, I looked at the terrain and felt the need to discuss Mentorship. Who is mentoring the next generation of leaders? Is it parents, teachers, friends, social media, or positive mentors? We should ask ourselves this question because the crop of leaders that we hope to steer the affairs of this nation must be those who look up to positive mentors otherwise how can they lead effectively. And to you reading this, today I want to ask you, who is your mentor?
