While women’s activism has been historically underlooked and underappreciated, it continues to be a vital and growing force globally, working to address gender inequality and a range of social justice issues. However, women’s activism has always been a powerful force, even when underlooked. In many regions, patriarchal systems still limit women’s participation in activism, politics, and public life. These systemic barriers can make it harder for women to organize, fund, and gain visibility for their causes.
Women youth groups
Women groups in Ghana such as CAMFED, NETRIGHT, Abantu for Development, just to mention a few, have all played significant roles in establishing young women into jobs and giving them economic empowerment. These groups have championed various causes which has led to the development of women across various sectors of development. However, little is been said about them especially in mainstream media making their efforts seem insignificant.
Gender based discrimination
Due to our patriarchal structures and systems, women activism seem to be non-existent in this part of the world although a lot has been done to help women break the glass ceiling. Some religious sects also play a role in discouraging women whose voices need to be heard. By observation, women suffer more threats when vying for positions or actively participating in activism as compared to men, while most lose their better halves in the quest for better conditions for their gender.
Community-based
Women leadership are mostly community-based making it difficult to document them in national leadership positions although a notable few exist. This community based roles focus on issues like healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability, which can be perceived as “less political” or less impactful by traditional standards.
Affirmative Action Act
After decades of advocacy, the Affirmative Action bill has been passed into law which will enable gender equity across various sectors of the economy. This should go a long way to empower more women and to have their lives documented in the annals of history for their active role in activism and politics. A huge congratulations to all who have toiled day and night in making sure this vision come to light for all women to benefit.
