Tea Thoughts (2): Dear ‘Taxi Driver’

Today on Tea Thoughts, I discuss one of the issues which has been making headlines this past week. Words allude me as I pen down these words to TT of Taxi Driver fame. The veteran actor has been in the news for still soliciting for help after coming out for the same reason a couple of months ago, which was just last year. By the way, this episode of Tea Thoughts was written in the afternoon and so instead of tea, I am drinking some Sobolo also known as the hibiscus drink.

Continuation of letter

We all know and cherish Psalm Adjetefio, popularly known as TT. Most of us saw him on our screens in the evenings as he and the other casts thrilled us to some exciting episodes of the Taxi Driver television series. Those were indeed good old days. Apart from the television series, TT was in other movies and adverts and was a known face in the entertainment industry.

What’s the build up?

Somewhere last year, the master TT himself, master TT oh! He came out saying he was a charity case and that he needed help paying his rent which was due in some few months time. Touching story it was, so much so that I went teary when I watched the video interview.

Okay, so video is out. Ghanaians loved to help and so they did help in many ways, through cash, goodies, and of course pledges. Many benevolent people as well as top government officials came out to support the actor with huge amounts of money which I think was a really nice gesture.

Fast forward…

Just so you know, the Sobolo I’m drinking here is really nice. It has some mint extracts which is making it really great to taste and I’m loving how chilled it is. Okay, let’s get back on track. So fast forward, TT is in the news again and this time he is seeking after leftovers. I really paused for a bit when I listened to the last part of the leaked audio of him asking whoever for “leftovers from the kitchen”.

After listening to the audio, I questioned his motives and I realized it sounded a bit genuine. But I further questioned whether the actor just liked asking people for things or whether he just happened to always be in dire need of money. I ask these questions because the monies which were previously donated to him were not in small amounts considering some of the figures circulating around.

Ask for help

I’m not against people asking for help and been vocal about their needs. Ask for help as much as you can and do not be shy about it. But Uncle, this time around you need to check it because it is getting out of hand. Now the fear for most young people who look up to you may be that they are going to be asking for “leftovers” when they are old like you.

Now everyone is asking what you did with all the monies which were previously handed to you while you were acting plus the recent donations you received. I’m glad to have heard that you invested some of the money in other ventures. Even some of my friends were asking why you are still investing money you need so badly considering your age. But we will leave that discussion for another day.

Acting career

With the career path that you chose, I have always assumed people in acting were rich but growing up I rescinded on my decision to become one because it seems it was not lucrative after all. I stand to be corrected.

Uncle, I do have one request and that is for you to kindly desist from granting interviews here and there and think of ways to use the little resources at your disposal to your advantage because these interviews will only create more problems for you.

I know that keeping and maintaining money in this harsh economy can be difficult but I am pleading with you to manage the little you have. I am sure that overtime, your many other pledges will also trickle in and you will be a happy man again. Hurray!

Final thoughts

Dear TT, as you go about your sweet old age, kindly focus on being a role model to some of us and rethink appearing in the tabloids every now and then only to seek for help. Some of the people you may be talking to are not really going to offer the help that you require.

Get back on track and be the TT that we all loved to watch. Are there no more roles in the acting industry for great actors like you to pick up? I’m sure there are many and so go make us proud once again.

Until then, “If you need a taxi, I dey here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days in a year, see ya!”. (Takes a sip of Sobolo and pushes glass away.)
