South African born specialist neurosurgeon, Dr Coceka Mfundisi, is the fifth black woman in South Africa to qualify as a Neurosurgeon. She practices at the Busamed Modderfontein Hospital in Johannesburg.
Dr Mfundisi holds a Master of Medicine in Neurosurgery from the University of Pretoria and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Cape Town. She completed training as a Specialist Neurosurgeon with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and became an Admitted Fellow of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa.
Dr Mfundisi became the first woman to qualify as a neurosurgeon from the University of Pretoria in its more than 100 year history. She is the second black woman to be admitted as a fellow of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa.
She previously worked at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, with a specific interest in Paediatric Neurosurgey. She is also a member of the Golden Lions Rugby Club Medical Committee.
